Abyan, Yemen - May 17, 2024: The Southern Transitional Council (STC) reported that three of its soldiers were injured in an attack by Al-Qaeda on Friday. The attack, allegedly carried out using an Iranian-made drone, took place in Wadi Awmaran, Abyan province, southern Yemen.
"Three soldiers were wounded in an Al-Qaeda attack using a UAV in Wadi Awmaran, Abyan province," said STC spokesperson Mohammed Al-Naqib, according to the council's official website.
Al-Naqib claimed the attack was part of Al-Qaeda's "arming process," facilitated by the internationally designated terrorist group, the Houthi rebels. He emphasized that this partnership aims to destabilize the south of Yemen.
Earlier this month, a report published by The Telegraph revealed cooperation between the Houthis and Al-Qaeda. The report claimed the Houthis were supplying Al-Qaeda with drones to regain control over southern provinces, posing a new threat to Yemen.
The report, translated by Brrane Press, stated that "Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are providing weapons to Al-Qaeda and engaging in prisoner exchange deals with them."
The report further highlighted the collaboration between the Houthis and the local branch of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), posing a significant risk to the war-torn and impoverished country.
The report accused the Houthis of "assisting AQAP in the Arabian Peninsula by providing them with unmanned aerial vehicles and releasing AQAP leaders from their prisons."
