The Marib branch of the Supreme Medicines Authority announced on Monday, May 27, 2024, the destruction of four tons of smuggled, damaged, and expired medicines. The announcement was made by the official Yemeni news agency Saba.

The authority also reported the destruction of 400 kilograms of medicines seized from pharmacies and warehouses in Marib City and several district capitals. This included 50 different types of medications.

Dr. Adel Al-Qarda'i, head of the Marib branch of the Supreme Medicines Authority, explained that the destruction resulted from a recent inspection campaign conducted by the authority to target expired and damaged medicines in Marib City.

Al-Qarda'i praised the role of security forces and personnel for their contribution in seizing quantities of smuggled and counterfeit medicines at various checkpoints and entrances to the governorate.

According to the local official, the campaign aims to regulate and monitor the pharmaceutical market in Marib.

Previous reports have revealed a growing prevalence of smuggled, substandard, and expired medicines. The reports also highlighted an increase in the number of pharmacies and healthcare facilities violating establishment laws and medical staff qualifications. This situation, coupled with a decline in government oversight, has negatively impacted the health and lives of citizens.
