Marib, Yemen - Ali Al-Abab, Deputy Minister of Education in the internationally recognized Yemeni government, met with a group of education-focused organizations and institutions, known as the "Education Bloc," in Marib Governorate on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Al-Abab emphasized the urgent need for a monthly stipend for teachers, stating that it should be sufficient to cover the cost of a basic food basket and should be provided by a donor agency. He highlighted the dire circumstances faced by teachers in Marib and across Yemen, noting that their current salaries are insufficient to meet their basic needs.

The Deputy Minister acknowledged previous attempts to secure funding from donor agencies, which were unsuccessful due to the argument that teachers are employed and therefore not eligible for programs targeting the most vulnerable segments of society.

During the meeting, Al-Abab urged for united efforts and collaboration between the Ministry of Education and its education partners to ensure the coverage of all educational projects, particularly those in displacement areas. He commended the contributions of education partners to educational projects over the past year.

It is worth noting that in September 2023, local authorities in Marib Governorate approved a monthly stipend for teachers and administrators working in the field for the second consecutive year, covering the 2023-2024 academic year. Additionally, the Public Health and Population Office in the governorate mandated a 50% discount on medical examinations, treatments, surgeries, and other health services for teachers in the governorate. This decision was attributed to the difficult living conditions faced by Yemeni teachers, their vital role in educating students, and their low wages.
