A devastating fire has destroyed 51 shelters for refugees in a camp in eastern Marib Governorate, Yemen, according to a report released by the Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Marib on Wednesday, June 26th, 2024.

The fire, which occurred in the "Bin Mua'ili" camp located in the third sector of Al-Wadi District, affected African refugees, causing no casualties. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, the Executive Unit has appealed to international organizations for urgent assistance in providing shelter, food, and other necessities for the affected refugees.

The report, seen by Barran Press,  revealed that a total of 135 families have lost their shelters in fires during the first half of 2024. This includes 84 Yemeni displaced families and 51 African refugee families.

The fires have also claimed two lives and injured 25 individuals. Additionally, 230 tents and 301 shelters have been destroyed, along with five houses and caravans.

The Executive Unit has urged humanitarian partners to implement programs aimed at preventing future fires. These programs should include raising awareness about fire hazards, replacing temporary shelters with more durable options, ensuring safe electrical wiring and maintenance, and activating emergency hotlines.

The situation in Marib highlights the precarious living conditions faced by refugees and internally displaced persons in Yemen. The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread displacement and a lack of basic services, making communities vulnerable to disasters like fires.
