Iran will hold a second round of presidential elections after no candidate secured a majority of votes in the first round, the Iranian Interior Ministry announced on Saturday, June 29th, 2024.

Preliminary results, after counting over 14 million votes cast in Friday's election, showed the sole reformist candidate, Masoud Pezeshkian, receiving over 5.9 million votes.

His main challenger, Saeed Jalili, a former nuclear negotiator and a hardline conservative aligned with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, garnered over 5.5 million votes, according to preliminary results.

"Pezeshkian and Jalili have qualified for the second round of the Iranian presidential election," a source told France Press, with the runoff scheduled for July 5th.

Sources informed Reuters that voter turnout was around 40%, while witnesses reported that polling stations in Tehran and other cities did not witness significant crowds.
