Lightning Strikes Claim Lives and Injure Several Across Yemen

A series of lightning strikes across Yemen have claimed the lives of three people and injured at least 10 others, highlighting the dangers of the current rainy season.

On Saturday, June 29th, 2024, sources told Barran Press that two young men were killed by lightning in the "Al-Houd" village of Al-Dhalea governorate (southern Yemen). The victims were identified as Zakaria Abdullah Naji and Ali Qaed Saleh Aboud. Two other young men sustained severe burns and injuries and were rushed to Al-Tadamon Hospital in critical condition.

In Ibb governorate (central Yemen), a woman died and seven other individuals, including another woman, were critically injured by lightning in the "Rababa" area of Al-Qafer district. The injured were transported to the hospital, while the woman succumbed to her injuries upon arrival.

On Friday, June 28th, a woman was killed by lightning in the Bani Saad district of Al-Mahwit governorate (northwest Yemen). The lightning struck the home of Jamil Ibrahim Silan Al-Hamali, killing his wife and electrocuting several livestock. Another lightning strike in the same district burned down the home of Ibrahim Al-Shadidi in the "Qarn Masjid" area. Fortunately, the occupants escaped unharmed, and residents were able to extinguish the fire.

In Taiz governorate (southwest Yemen), lightning killed 52 sheep in a mountainous pasture in the Al-Salo district.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by lightning during Yemen's rainy season.
