A political symposium held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, by the Makha Center for Strategic Studies, highlighted the crucial role of Egyptian mediation in ending the war and fostering peace in Yemen.

Organized in collaboration with the Egyptian Center for Dialogue for Political and Media Studies, the symposium, according to a statement released by the Makha Center and seen by Barran Press, discussed the roles of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman in the Yemeni peace process.

The symposium attributed the importance of Egyptian mediation to Egypt's unwavering support for Arab interests and regional stability, coupled with its extensive experience in resolving complex conflicts.

The symposium also acknowledged Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's commitment to supporting Yemen's unity and sovereignty, and his dedication to finding a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Yemeni crisis.

The symposium addressed various key aspects, including the significance of Yemen to Arab national security, and the expected roles of the three countries (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman) in promoting peace and stability in Yemen.

The symposium emphasized that Yemen's strategic location on the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as its control over the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait, makes it a crucial pillar of Arab national security. It also highlighted Yemen's importance in safeguarding the strategic interests of Arab national security and the African continent.

Participants in the symposium recognized the Yemeni people's understanding that strengthening the Arab role is essential for restoring security and stability in Yemen. They expressed their appreciation for the tripartite mediation efforts, particularly the Egyptian role in supporting stability and peace in Yemen.

The symposium commended the prominent roles of Saudi Arabia and Oman in achieving peace and stability in Yemen through their multifaceted efforts in the political, economic, security, development, and humanitarian spheres.

The symposium acknowledged the role of the Arab Coalition in Support Legitimacy in Yemen, led by Saudi Arabia, and emphasized the importance of these efforts in achieving stability in Yemen.

The symposium also confirmed the alignment of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman's positions regarding resolving the Yemeni crisis through supporting ongoing efforts to establish peace and stability based on the Yemeni National Dialogue references, the Gulf initiative and its implementation mechanisms, the results of ongoing consultations under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and relevant UN and Arab resolutions.

The symposium pointed out the declining role of the United Nations in resolving Middle Eastern and Arab issues due to conflicting interests among major powers in the Security Council, exacerbating regional and international crises. It called for a unified Arab vision to address Arab issues, particularly the Yemeni crisis, through activating mechanisms for joint Arab action and avoiding reliance on international parties to resolve Arab issues.

In this context, the symposium condemned the actions of the Houthis in Yemen and highlighted the need for Yemeni unity in confronting the Houthis, considering them a threat comparable to that of ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
