The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced on Thursday, July 11, 2024, the establishment of a NATO liaison office in the Kingdom, aimed at strengthening cooperative relations with the alliance.

A joint statement issued by the ministry and NATO regarding the decision to open the office in Amman stated: "At the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington, Allies adopted an action plan to strengthen the cooperative approach in the Middle East and North Africa region to keep pace with the developments in the regional and global security landscape."

The statement added: "This plan emphasized the Alliance's commitment to strengthening cooperation with its southern neighbors, including through the establishment of a NATO liaison office in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This is the first such office in the region."

The statement noted that the decision to open the office, which was announced in the final communiqué of the NATO Summit in Lithuania in July 2023, represents "a milestone in the deep strategic partnership between Jordan and the Alliance. NATO recognizes Jordan's pivotal role in achieving regional and international stability and commends its longstanding achievements in combating cross-border threats such as terrorism and violent extremism."

Regarding the role of the office, the statement said that the office, as a representative of the Alliance, will contribute to "enhancing political dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest between NATO and Jordan."

It will also lead to "achieving the desired progress in implementing partnership programs and activities, including holding conferences, workshops, and training programs in areas such as strategic analysis, emergency planning, public diplomacy, cybersecurity, climate change management, crisis management, and civil defense," according to the statement.
