Yemeni Security Forces Seize Over 9,000 Weapons and 497 Wanted Criminals in Six Months

Official statistics released on Friday, July 19, 2024, revealed the capture of 497 wanted criminals and over 9,000 weapons in the past six months in areas under the control of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Major General Mohammed Musaid Al-Amir, Deputy Minister of Interior for Security and Police Affairs, stated that security forces in liberated governorates and areas apprehended 6,143 different criminal offenses during the first half of the year, out of a total of 9,522 recorded crimes.

In a statement published by the security media, Major General Al-Amir added that "3,397 crimes are still under investigation and follow-up."

During the same period, Al-Amir said that "security forces apprehended 8,225 suspects, including 497 wanted criminals, and the rest are accused of various criminal offenses during the current year. Additionally, 9,531 different weapons were seized during the same period."

Al-Amir commended the "significant efforts exerted by security agencies and police departments in liberated governorates to achieve security and stability, protect lives and property, combat crime, apprehend perpetrators, and pursue and capture wanted individuals."

According to the security official, police and security agencies carried out "400,000 security missions and movements" during the same period.

He explained that "the most frequent and recurring criminal offenses were physical assault with 2,217 cases, of which 1,699 were apprehended. This was followed by theft offenses with 2,013 cases, and then offenses against property with 766 cases."

He indicated that "security and police agencies recorded 514 non-criminal security incidents, with 264 deaths and 93 injuries."

Furthermore, he stated that "traffic police apprehended 8,260 traffic violations during the first half of the year and recorded 2,066 traffic accidents." He added that these accidents resulted in the deaths of 256 people and injuries to 1,658 individuals, with 805 injuries being severe and 853 being moderate to minor.

Regarding travel to and from Yemen through land, sea, and airports, Al-Amir clarified that the number of arrivals reached 829,182 visitors and travelers, including 35,128 foreigners and 54,033 Arabs. The number of departing citizens reached 740,021.

Meanwhile, the number of departures reached 885,420 individuals, including 35,939 foreigners, 60,480 Arabs, and 784,001 Yemeni citizens, according to the security official.

In 2023, the Ministry of Interior in the internationally recognized Yemeni government reported the occurrence of 16,539 criminal offenses, of which 10,484 were apprehended.

During a press conference at the beginning of the year, the ministry confirmed that its security agencies apprehended 12,846 suspects out of 15,713 suspects in the aforementioned crimes. The search for 1,303 fugitives from justice is still ongoing.
