A mock trial highlighting sexual violence and child recruitment during the ongoing conflict in Yemen was held in Taiz on Monday, July 22, 2024. The event, organized by the Yemeni Coalition for Monitoring Human Rights Violations (YCMHRV), a member of the Justice Charter Coalition for Yemen, was part of the "SAFE" project aimed at raising awareness and safeguarding children's rights during armed conflict.

Muthar Al-Baidhaji, Executive Director of YCMHRV, emphasized the importance of the mock trial, stating that it aimed to "combat impunity by sending negative messages to violators of children's rights during armed conflict, and to educate participants about the importance of local and international laws in protecting human rights and the rights of the child."

He further explained that the event aimed to "combat impunity and the lack of justice for children by sending messages to violators of children's rights about the inevitability of accountability. It also aimed to raise awareness among participants about the importance of local and international laws, encourage victims to file reports and preserve evidence, and highlight the humanitarian suffering of child victims and their families."

The mock trial, enacted by law students from Taiz University, featured two separate sessions. The first session focused on the issue of sexual violence, while the second addressed the issue of child recruitment.

Both sessions were based on real cases documented by YCMHRV, with the names of perpetrators, defendants, and locations changed to protect the victims' identities.
