Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi on Monday, July 22, 2024, briefed the European Union delegation on the latest developments in Yemen, including the repercussions of the Israeli airstrikes on Yemeni territory, and the attacks by the internationally recognized terrorist group, the Houthis, on oil facilities, cargo ships, and global trade.

The meeting, according to the official Yemeni news agency Saba, took place during a meeting with the Head of the EU Delegation to Yemen, Gabriel Monera Vinallés, and the German Ambassador, Hubert Jäger.

The discussion touched upon "local developments, and the required European humanitarian and development interventions to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people, caused by the Houthi terrorist militia, supported by the Iranian regime. It also covered regional developments and issues of mutual interest."

President Alimi urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards the Israeli-Iranian defiance and their attempts to plunge regional countries into a cycle of violence and chaos, turning them into a stage for settling the just causes of the region's peoples. He emphasized the importance of implementing international legitimacy resolutions, including the resolution on the Iranian arms embargo, and activating the UN monitoring mechanisms covered by these resolutions."

He reiterated the "Council's and the government's commitment to comprehensive and just peace based on nationally, regionally, and internationally agreed-upon references, particularly Resolution 2216. In this context, he affirmed full support for the efforts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UN Special Envoy to launch a comprehensive political process that meets the aspirations of all Yemenis in building their national state that guarantees rights, freedoms, and equal citizenship."

On Saturday afternoon, powerful explosions rocked the city of Hodeidah following airstrikes that Houthi media claimed targeted oil storage facilities in the port, resulting in casualties.

Israel later claimed responsibility for the airstrikes. An Israeli military spokesperson stated that "our warplanes carried out strikes against Houthi regime targets in the Hodeidah port area in Yemen." He added that the strikes were "in response to Houthi attacks over the past months."

On Friday morning, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority announced the death of one Israeli and injuries to 10 others following the crash of a drone in Tel Aviv. The Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as "the first of its kind."
