The United Nations has reported two deaths and damage to 1,300 shelters for internally displaced persons (IDPs) following floods that swept through Sa'dah governorate in northern Yemen, a region controlled by the Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by the UN.
The information was released in a report by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), published on X (formerly Twitter) late Wednesday.
According to the UNHCR, " Sa'dahcity experienced heavy rains and thunderstorms, causing significant damage to temporary shelters and property of families in numerous areas and displacement sites."
The report stated that "these floods resulted in two deaths, one a child and the other an elderly man."
The UNHCR clarified that it is "working with partners to assess the urgent needs of those affected by these floods."
Yemen suffers from severe infrastructure weakness, exacerbating the impact of floods and adding to the misery of a population already struggling with fragile essential services due to the ongoing war, which has lasted for nearly nine years.
