Fifty-five Yemeni fishermen have returned to the fishing port in Hodeidah, Yemen, after being kidnapped and tortured by Eritrean authorities for several days.
The Yemeni Fisheries Authority confirmed the fishermen's return on Friday, July 26, 2024, in a statement. The authority reported that Eritrean naval patrols had abducted the fishermen while they were fishing in Yemeni waters aboard five boats. They were then taken to Eritrean prisons.
The fishermen recounted harrowing tales of torture and mistreatment at the hands of Eritrean authorities. They also revealed that their boats, fishing gear, and personal belongings were confiscated. The Eritrean navy returned them to Hodeidah on a single boat.
This incident marks the latest in a series of kidnappings of Yemeni fishermen by Eritrean authorities. In June 2024, 23 fishermen were released after being held captive for two weeks.
The Yemeni Fisheries Authority condemned the continued abduction and mistreatment of Yemeni fishermen. They expressed concern over the lack of government intervention to protect the fishermen and retrieve their confiscated property.
The fishermen's return highlights the ongoing tension and conflict in the Red Sea region, impacting the livelihoods of Yemeni fishermen. The lack of effective protection for these vulnerable individuals raises serious concerns about the safety and security of Yemeni fishermen in the area.
