The seasonal northerly winds blowing from the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) have intensified, causing sand dunes to encroach upon paved roads in the desert regions of eastern Yemen, posing a danger to travelers.
"Barran Press" correspondent reported on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, that the increased activity of the seasonal northerly winds this year has led to significant sand dune encroachment on the main road connecting Marib and Hadhramaut governorates in eastern Yemen.
The correspondent explained that the main road is experiencing heavy sand accumulation between the Al-Areqein and Sa'fer areas, east of Marib governorate, necessitating extreme caution from drivers, especially on paved roads that traverse through sand dunes.
The correspondent noted that a bus carrying passengers was involved in an accident in the Sa'fer-Al-Areqein road due to sand dune encroachment on the main road.
The correspondent added that the branch of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges in Shabwa governorate has initiated efforts to clear debris and obstacles hindering traffic on the main road connecting Al-Ubar district in western Hadhramaut to Ataq, the capital of Shabwa governorate.
In a statement, the General Manager of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges branch in Shabwa governorate, Engineer Awad Dimman Al-Aqeili, confirmed that work continues on roads affected by sand dune encroachment in Shabwa governorate until the end of the windy season.
