Marib, Yemen: Emergency committees in Marib governorate have begun rescue and repair operations following heavy rains and thunderstorms that struck the area on Sunday, August 11, 2024, causing significant damage to displacement camps and public services.

Marib Deputy Governor, Abdulrabah Muftah, stated in a press release, seen by "Barran Press" that emergency committees have been working since the initial rainfall and storms to implement the pre-prepared disaster emergency plan.

"The Civil Defense teams and security forces have been deployed to assist with rescue and evacuation efforts, relocating affected families in camps to designated schools for temporary shelter," said Muftah.

Public Works, Roads, Sanitation, and Beautification teams are continuously operating equipment to build water barriers, protecting residential areas and camps from accumulating rainwater.

Damage assessment committees have been working since the initial storm subsided to assess the extent of the damage and identify affected families. These committees will submit their report to the emergency committee later today.

Electricity emergency committees continue working to repair damaged power lines, aiming to restore power to camps and residential areas that have been affected by the outages.

Muftah highlighted that the city's prior preparations to protect against flood damage, including the creation of drainage channels to divert water away from residential areas, significantly mitigated the extent of the damage and prevented a potential disaster.

Earlier today, medical sources reported that three individuals died and ten others were injured due to the heavy rains and storms in Marib. The heavy rains caused the deaths of three citizens and injuries to ten others, who were transported to various hospitals for treatment.

The emergency room at the Marib General Hospital received one fatality and three injured individuals. Among the deceased was citizen "Haydar Ahmed Al-Hadad," who was killed when a wall collapsed on him due to the storms.

The heavy rains and storms also caused a complete power outage in the city of Marib after transmission lines were significantly damaged. Photos show the damage caused by the rains and floods to displacement camps, including the "Jo Al-Nissim" camp near the city.

The low-pressure system continues to persist, with more rainfall expected in the coming hours.

Over the past few days, several Yemeni governorates have experienced torrential rainfall, leading to casualties and damage to citizens' property, particularly in displacement camps.
