Local authorities in the Yemeni governorate of Marib (northeastern Yemen) issued an urgent plea for aid on Sunday, August 11, 2024, appealing to international and regional organizations, humanitarian partners, businessmen, merchants, and philanthropists to provide relief and shelter to those affected by the recent storms and heavy rains.

The appeal, issued by the Marib Office of Planning and International Cooperation and received by "Barran Press," highlighted the destruction of numerous shelters for internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of the severe storms and heavy rains that struck the governorate earlier that day.

According to the statement, initial reports indicate four fatalities and dozens of injuries. Additionally, over 2,900 families have suffered complete damage to their homes, while over 4,200 families have experienced partial damage.

The statement emphasizes that the flooding has inundated many homes, destroying property, and leaving many families without shelter. It underscores the urgent need for immediate intervention and swift support to rescue people, provide assistance, and alleviate their suffering.

Regarding electricity, the Marib Planning Office reported significant damage to the power grid and transmission lines, resulting in power outages across numerous residential areas in the governorate. The office urged everyone to cooperate and extend a helping hand during these challenging times.

Earlier on Sunday, the Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Marib revealed preliminary statistics on the extent of damage caused by the heavy rains among IDPs, reporting 14 fatalities and injuries.

The Executive Unit's preliminary statistics, received by the Yemen News Agency (Saba), indicated that the heavy rains, thunderstorms, strong winds, and hailstorms that swept through the governorate resulted in the deaths of four IDPs and injuries to 10 others, including children and women.

The unit reported that the floods caused by the heavy rains inundated IDP camps, damaging the shelters of 7,179 displaced families. This included 2,973 shelters that were completely destroyed and 4,206 shelters that were partially damaged across several camps in the governorate.

On Sunday, Marib (northeastern Yemen) experienced heavy rains, and severe thunderstorms accompanied by winds, hail, and lightning that lasted for hours, causing significant damage to IDP camps and public services.

Earlier, medical sources in Marib reported four fatalities and 10 injuries in preliminary statistics resulting from the rains and thunderstorms that struck the governorate on Sunday.

The sources, speaking to "Bran Press," stated that the heavy rains that hit Marib on Sunday morning resulted in the deaths of three citizens and injuries to 10 others, who were transported to various hospitals for treatment.
