The King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid launched the distribution of emergency shelter and food aid to victims of the floods and torrential rains that hit Marib governorate (northeastern Yemen) on Sunday morning, August 11, 2024.
According to a statement from the center, seen by "Barran Press," the intervention includes the distribution of 400 tents and 430 shelter kits, as well as food aid for 1,842 families. Additionally, the center will continue to distribute food aid to 6,207 families as part of its life-saving food assistance project.
During the launch, Marib Deputy Governor, Abdulrabah Muftah, praised the swift intervention of the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid in assisting families affected by the floods, noting that the emergency aid "will help alleviate the suffering of the displaced families."
Meanwhile, the director of the Executive Unit for Managing IDP Camps in Marib, Saif Mathna, said that the floods had caused total or partial damage to thousands of families. He expressed gratitude to the King Salman Relief Center for its prompt response to the victims.
This intervention comes in response to calls for aid issued by local authorities in Marib to assist those affected by the floods and alleviate the suffering of families impacted by the torrential rains and storms.
On Sunday, Marib governorate (northeastern Yemen) witnessed heavy rains and severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, hail, and lightning that lasted for hours, causing significant damage to IDP camps and public services.
Following the floods and storms, which caused extensive damage, local authorities in Marib issued a plea for assistance to all international and regional organizations, humanitarian partners, businesspeople, merchants, and philanthropists to provide aid and shelter to the affected population.
This urgent appeal, issued by the Marib Office of Planning and International Cooperation and received by "Bran Press," confirmed that many IDP homes were destroyed by the storms and heavy rains that hit the governorate on Sunday morning.
According to the report, "initial reports indicate four deaths and dozens of injuries, in addition to the total damage of over 2,900 families and partial damage to over 4,200 families."
The report stated that "water flooded many homes and damaged property, and most families have no shelter." It also highlighted that "the scale of suffering is significant and requires immediate intervention and swift advocacy to rescue people, assist them, and alleviate their suffering."
