Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, witnessed the launch of the issuance of electronic ID cards for employees of official media institutions on Monday, August 12, 2024.

According to the official Yemeni News Agency Saba, Deputy Minister of Information Hussein Basaleem inaugurated the issuance process of the electronic ID card in the presence of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the October 14th Press, Printing and Publishing Foundation, Mohammed Bashraheel.

The agency reported that Basaleem was briefed by the Director General of Civil Status and Civil Registry, Major General Sand Jamil, on the mechanism for issuing the electronic card and ways to overcome obstacles.

The agency highlighted that Basaleem praised the issuance of the electronic card and the ease of access for journalists.

In December 2023, the Ministry of Interior launched the issuance of smart chip ID cards, which it had previously announced, highlighting the advantages of the smart card, which it said was designed in collaboration with global companies in the field of verification systems and data encryption.

At the time, the ministry emphasized the need for all Yemeni citizens to obtain the card and benefit from its services, a step considered significant by many as it was no longer linked to the Houthi group in Sana'a, which had controlled the issuance of ID cards for years.
