Marib, Yemen - Local authorities in Marib governorate, northeastern Yemen, on Tuesday, August 13th, honored 860 young men and women, as well as youth initiatives and organizations, in celebration of International Youth Day.

The event, organized by the Marib Youth and Sports Office, coincided with the annual celebration of International Youth Day, which falls on August 12th.

Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, Abdullah Abu al-Ghaith, and Marib Governor's Deputy, Ali al-Fatemi, emphasized the government's commitment to supporting young people, recognizing them as the cornerstone of societal progress and national development.

They condemned the Houthis' actions in targeting youth, including the destruction of educational infrastructure, the manipulation of young minds with extremist ideologies, and the recruitment of young people as cannon fodder in their senseless war against the Yemeni people and the region. They also denounced the Houthis' widespread distribution of drugs as part of their campaign to destroy society and generate revenue.

Abu al-Ghaith and al-Fatemi expressed confidence that Yemen, currently under the control of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia, will be restored through the efforts of educated, qualified, and patriotic youth. They envisioned a future Yemen as a federal state founded on constitutional principles, justice, equality, and equal citizenship.

Speeches delivered at the ceremony highlighted the importance of International Youth Day in raising awareness about youth issues, needs, and their role in the present and future.

The ceremony included the recognition of 780 young men and women who completed computer and English language training courses at the Marib Youth and Sports Office's Capacity Development Center. Additionally, 80 youth initiatives, organizations, and foundations that have distinguished themselves in serving the youth sector were honored.

International Youth Day was first celebrated on August 12th, 2000. The United Nations considers it an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring youth participation and engagement, deeming it crucial for achieving sustainable human development.
