The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued an urgent appeal for $25 million in international aid to assist those affected by devastating floods in Yemen.

The appeal was made in a statement released by the UNHCR Shelter Cluster on the X platform, which was also shared by the UNHCR's official account and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen.

“Urgent appeal for Yemen,” the statement read. “Catastrophic floods have affected over 294,000 people. Our partners have provided life-saving assistance to 67,500 people, but a funding gap of $25 million remains.”

The UNHCR Shelter Cluster urged donors to contribute, stating, “Your support can save lives. Donate now,” according to the Anadolu Agency.

Since the beginning of August, Yemen has experienced heavy rainfall, leading to the deaths of dozens and the displacement of thousands, particularly those living in camps for internally displaced persons.

On Thursday evening, Lisa Dutton, Director of Funding and Partnerships at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), announced that the number of flood-related deaths in Yemen since the beginning of the year had risen to 98, with an additional 600 injured.

Yemen's fragile infrastructure has exacerbated the impact of the floods, adding to the suffering of a population already struggling with the consequences of a decade-long civil war. The country's basic services are severely compromised, making the effects of the floods even more devastating.
