Hodeidah, Yemen – August 19, 2024 – Two children sustained serious injuries after detonating a landmine in Hodeidah governorate, according to a human rights source.
Journalist and human rights activist Basim Al-Janani reported on X (seen by "Barran Press") that the children were severely injured by a landmine planted by the Houthi group, which is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries.
Al-Janani stated that the children were playing in rainwater in the Abu Halfa area of Hodeidah city when the landmine exploded. He highlighted that the area remains heavily contaminated with mines planted by the Houthis, posing a constant threat to civilians.
According to UN reports, the Houthis have planted an estimated two million landmines in areas under their control, resulting in the deaths and injuries of over 20,000 civilians, primarily women and children. rights reports accuse the Houthis of transforming Yemen into the world's largest minefield, urging the group to provide maps of the planted mines to demining organizations.
