Yemen is experiencing a surge in rainfall, with weather expert Khalid Al-Shath, known as "Abu Nasser Al-Babakri," attributing the intensity to a strong, humid easterly wave originating from India.
In an exclusive statement to "Barran Press" on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, Al-Babakri explained that this wave is significantly different from previous ones, which were characterized as weak to moderate air troughs.
He elaborated that the current wave has formed a deep low-pressure area in the upper layers of the atmosphere, which is expected to traverse Yemen from east to west.
Al-Babakri noted that Yemen has witnessed the influx of humid easterly waves into eastern regions over the past two days. The effects of this strong, deep easterly wave in the upper atmosphere have resulted in a rainfall pattern distinct from previous ones, with all factors contributing to its increased intensity and force.
The renowned weather expert has placed eastern Yemen regions, including Hadhramaut, Shabwah, Mahrah, Marib, and Al-Jawf, under close observation for the next few hours. He anticipates extremely heavy rainfall in these governorates over the next two days.
Al-Babakri cited the latest satellite imagery, captured at 3 PM on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, showing the formation of strong thunderous cumulus clouds over areas of Mahrah, Hadhramaut, Shabwah, Marib, Al-Jawf, Abyan, Aden, Lahj, Al-Bayda, and most of the western highlands, extending to the southern and western coastal regions. He predicts that this thunderous activity, accompanied by extremely heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms, will persist until Wednesday morning.
He emphasized that Tuesday marks the peak of this weather event's impact on most of Yemen, urging caution and avoidance of wadi beds. He anticipates flash floods in the aforementioned areas.
