The Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces reported late Tuesday, August 20, 2024, that one of their soldiers was killed in an attack by Al-Qaeda militants on one of their positions in Abyan Governorate (southern Yemen).

According to a statement published on the official website of the STC forces, "The Southern Shield," Al-Qaeda elements launched an attack on a position belonging to the Security Belt forces in the "Al-Jaz'a" valley between the "Ambqirah" and "Amsarah" areas in the Modiyah district of Abyan Governorate.

The statement indicated that the Security Belt forces successfully repelled the attack after clashes between the two sides, inflicting "heavy losses" on Al-Qaeda elements. However, one member of the Security Belt forces was killed.

Last Friday, August 16, the STC reported the deaths of 16 of their soldiers in a suicide bombing that targeted a military barracks in Abyan Governorate.

STC spokesperson Mohammed al-Naqib stated that "a terrorist attack using a car bomb driven by a suicide bomber targeted a barracks of our forces in the Modiyah district of Abyan Governorate."

Later on Friday, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed responsibility for the attack. The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist media and is based in the United States, reported that the organization said a "suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at the military site."
