The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Friday, August 23, 2024, that three fires were observed on board a Greek-flagged tanker, a day after its crew was evacuated following an attack in the Red Sea.

In a notice published on its official X account, monitored by "Barran Press, the UKMTO stated that they received reports of three fires aboard the vessel, following an attack by the Houthi group, internationally designated as a terrorist organization.

The UKMTO indicated that the Greek tanker, which "appears to be drifting," was attacked by the Houthis, resulting in engine failure.

On Thursday, the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) mission in the Red Sea (ASPIDIS) reported that the tanker, carrying 150,000 tons of crude oil, now poses an environmental hazard.

The "Sounion" tanker is the third vessel operated by Athens-based Delta Tankers to be attacked in the Red Sea this month.

Since November 2023, the Houthi group has been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial cargo ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden.

The group's attacks have led to increased maritime insurance costs and prompted many international shipping companies to opt for the much longer route around the southern tip of Africa.

To deter the Houthis, the "Guardians of Prosperity" coalition, led by the United States and with significant British involvement, launched airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen in January 2024. The Houthis, in turn, expanded their operations to target vessels linked to Washington and London, as they announced.
