The Yemeni army announced on Friday, August 23, 2024, that the Houthi group, internationally designated as a terrorist organization, targeted the Safer oil facility in Marib Governorate (northeastern Yemen) with three suicide drones.
According to a statement from the Yemeni armed forces, published on the official website of the Ministry of Defense "September Net," the Houthi group targeted the Safer oil facility early Friday morning with three winged suicide drones carrying high explosives.
The statement said, "At precisely 3:26 a.m., the Houthi terrorist group, backed by the Iranian regime, targeted the Safer oil facility in Marib Governorate with three winged suicide drones carrying high explosives in a cowardly terrorist attempt to destroy this vital civilian facility."
The Yemeni army confirmed that the drones were shot down before they could achieve their "criminal" objectives, explaining that information indicates that the hostile drones were launched from a point located between the areas of "Dhayda and Qarn al-Sai'ri" east of the city of Hazm, the capital of Al-Jawf Governorate, which is under Houthi control.
The Yemeni forces also emphasized their readiness to respond to such actions that target the interests of the Yemeni people and its sovereign economic facilities.
In May 2024, a Houthi leader, internationally designated as a terrorist, threatened to target oil facilities in Marib Governorate (northeastern Yemen) and halt oil extraction from the Safer fields, similar to what happened in Shabwah and Hadhramaut Governorates (east). This threat came a day after the group announced what it called "phase four" of its escalation against Israeli ships.
