The Yemeni Ministry of Interior, recognized by the international community, announced on Sunday, September 1, 2024, that Yemeni identity and travel documents have gained international recognition after joining the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD).

According to the official Yemeni news agency Saba, Interior Minister Ibrahim Haydan stated that this "is a significant step in strengthening the security of travel and identity documents in Yemen."

He added that Yemen's inclusion in the ICAO paves the way for the Ministry of Interior's strategic plans to develop electronic services, including digital identity and the future e-passport, which will provide an additional layer of security and convenience for Yemeni citizens.

Haydan emphasized that this move makes documents more reliable and capable of secure and efficient electronic verification, facilitating the movement of citizens across borders and at airports while enhancing national security.

The Yemeni minister asserted that international recognition will contribute to strengthening international cooperation in combating terrorism and organized crime, and raising the ranking of the Yemeni passport.

In December 2023, the Ministry of Interior launched the issuance of smart chip identity cards, previously announced, highlighting the advantages of the smart card, which they said was designed in collaboration with global companies specializing in verification systems and data encryption.
