The Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture, recognized by the international community, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, in the field of fisheries.
The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the International Fisheries Industry Forum and Exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia, according to the official Yemeni news agency Saba. The MoU was signed by Yemeni Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries Salem al-Saktari and the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries, Ilya Vasilyevich Shestakov.
During the signing, the Yemeni minister highlighted the deep historical ties between Yemen and Russia, emphasizing the importance of the MoU in fostering a partnership between the two friendly countries.
The head of the Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries stressed his country's commitment to creating new avenues for economic cooperation in Yemen, emphasizing the importance of knowledge exchange through studies at Russian institutes and universities, and the development of fisheries aspects.
On September 16, the Yemeni Minister of Agriculture departed Aden to participate in the International Fisheries Industry Forum and Exhibition, which was held over three days in St. Petersburg.
According to Saba, Minister al-Saktari stated that the purpose of his participation was to learn about the latest developments and technologies in the fisheries industry and explore knowledge exchange with companies specializing in sustainable fisheries development.
Yemen boasts a vast fish stock and a coastline exceeding 2,000 kilometers, with over 450 fish species. However, the fisheries sector remains underutilized and lacks the investments needed to boost production and protect marine life.
St. Petersburg hosted the seventh edition of the International Fisheries Forum and Exhibition, showcasing fishing, seafood, and fishing technology from around the world.
