The Yemeni government emphasized that the resolution mandates Israel to comply with its obligations under international law.
The Foreign Ministry described the passage of the resolution, which received overwhelming support from member states, as a significant victory for the Palestinian cause and a clear message from the international community advocating for an end to the occupation and alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.
The statement underscored the importance of collective efforts to achieve peace and establish a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
On September 18, 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution with 124 votes in favor, demanding that Israel "end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories" within 12 months. This decision was based on a legal opinion requested by the General Assembly from the International Court of Justice regarding the legal implications of Israel's policies and practices in Palestine.
The resolution aims to support the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in July, which called for an end to the illegal Israeli occupation, the dismantling of settlements and their associated systems, the removal of the separation wall, and the evacuation of all settlers from the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The General Assembly approved the first resolution presented by Palestine, demanding Israel's withdrawal from the occupied territories within a year, with 124 votes in favor and 14 against.
The Palestinian permanent mission to the UN submitted its first draft resolution on Tuesday, following the additional rights it gained from a vote in the General Assembly in May. The resolution was co-sponsored by over 40 countries during a special emergency session titled "Israeli Illegal Actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the Rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territories."
Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with unwavering American support, has been waging a devastating war in Gaza, resulting in over 136,000 Palestinian casualties, the majority of whom are women and children, and more than 10,000 missing persons, amid widespread destruction and a dire famine.
On October 27, 2023, the General Assembly called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, passing with 120 votes in favor. In December, 153 countries voted in favor of demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire rather than merely calling for it.
In defiance of the international community, Israel continues its military campaign, disregarding the UN Security Council's call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the International Court of Justice's orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the besieged Gaza Strip.
