The Russian government confirmed on Thursday, September 19, 2024, its decision to reopen its embassy in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, to enhance communication and coordination with the Yemeni government.

The announcement came during a meeting between Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council member Tariq Saleh and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow. The meeting focused on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries across various fields, according to the official Yemeni news agency Saba.

The meeting discussed a range of issues of mutual interest, including the need for collective international efforts to advance peace initiatives in Yemen, involving all parties under the auspices of the United Nations and international partners. The importance of unified international action to achieve regional stability and protect maritime security, particularly in the Red Sea, was also emphasized.

Saleh and Lavrov exchanged views on various regional challenges and expressed support for the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people. They stressed the importance of continued coordination and consultation to strengthen the partnership, support mutual interests between the two countries, and revive Yemeni-Russian joint committees.

Saleh welcomed Russia's decision to reopen its embassy in Yemen but called on the Russian side to reconsider the suspension of study visas for Yemeni students in Russia.

Saleh arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, September 18, for an official visit that will last several days. During the visit, he is scheduled to meet with several Russian officials and leaders, according to Saba.
