On September 25, 2024, Yemen's Foreign Minister and Minister of Expatriates, Shaya Al-Zindani, cautioned against the dangers of complacency or postponement in addressing the Yemeni crisis amid ongoing economic and political challenges. He highlighted the continued influx of weapons and funds to the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization.

Al-Zindani made these remarks during a roundtable session in New York focused on the political and military dimensions of the Houthi threat to regional security, according to the official Yemeni news agency, Saba.

The minister emphasized the need to reassess how to respond to the Houthi threats to international waterways. He called for bolstering the Yemeni government through political, economic, and military support to enhance the capabilities of state institutions responsible for ensuring sustainable security in these vital maritime routes. This, he argued, would position Yemen as an effective partner in maintaining regional security.

He also pointed to the implications of attacks in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait on political solutions in Yemen, as well as the devastating environmental impacts and serious economic repercussions for both Yemen and neighboring countries. Al-Zindani stressed the importance of implementing UN resolutions related to Yemen, particularly Resolution 2216, as an appropriate framework for resolving the crisis.

The discussion underscored the critical need to de-escalate tensions in the Red Sea and to support the Yemeni government and its institutions in facing existing challenges. Efforts to achieve lasting peace in Yemen were also highlighted as a priority for both regional and international stakeholders.
