On September 27, 2024, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to support the Presidential Leadership Council and the internationally recognized Yemeni government in mobilizing resources to alleviate humanitarian suffering in Yemen.
During a meeting with Council President Rashad Al-Alimi and Council members Aidarus Al-Zubaidi and Othman Majli, Guterres addressed the ongoing crisis in Yemen. He emphasized the UN’s dedication to leveraging all efforts to resume the political process and empower Yemenis to build a state based on partnership, justice, and respect for human rights.
According to the Yemeni news agency Saba, Al-Alimi praised the UN’s role and Guterres’ valued efforts to mitigate the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by Houthi attacks on oil facilities and international shipping routes.
The Council President briefed the UN Secretary-General on national developments, including economic, service, and human rights reforms led by the Council and government, as well as the necessary international interventions at all levels.
Al-Alimi also discussed Saudi and Omani efforts to initiate a political process under UN auspices and the government’s openness to various initiatives aimed at achieving peace based on nationally, regionally, and internationally agreed-upon frameworks, particularly relevant international resolutions.
He highlighted the Houthi group’s documented human rights violations and called for pressure to ensure the unconditional release of UN personnel and humanitarian workers.
