On Wednesday, the United Nations announced that approximately 489,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since the beginning of 2024 due to "armed conflict and harsh weather conditions."
According to a report from the UN Population Fund's office in Yemen, around 489,545 individuals have fled their homes since January 2024 as a result of ongoing armed conflict and severe climatic conditions.
The report noted that among the displaced, "93.8% (459,347 individuals) were severely affected or displaced due to climate-related crises, while 6.2% (30,198 individuals) were displaced due to conflict."
It further highlighted that "from January to September 2024, the Rapid Response Mechanism led by the Fund provided lifesaving emergency assistance to 86.5% (423,451 individuals) of those registered for aid across 20 provinces."
The report emphasized the critical role of the multi-sector rapid response mechanism, operated by the UN Population Fund in collaboration with the World Food Programme, UNICEF, and other humanitarian partners, in addressing urgent needs arising from conflict and climate-related disasters in Yemen.
Since early August, rainfall has increased in several Yemeni provinces, leading to the deaths of around 210 people and affecting hundreds of thousands due to flooding and accompanying thunderstorms, particularly those living in displacement camps.
Yemen continues to suffer from severely weakened infrastructure, exacerbating the impact of flooding and worsening the plight of residents who are already struggling with fragile basic services due to the repercussions of a civil war that has persisted for nearly a decade.
