On the evening of Sunday, October 6, 2024, the Yemeni rial collapsed to an unprecedented low against foreign currencies in areas controlled by the internationally recognized Yemeni government, according to banking sources.
In unofficial trading in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, the exchange rate for the U.S. dollar reached 1,925 rials for purchasing, up from 1,918 earlier in the day, while the selling price was noted at 1,939 rials. In Marib, the dollar was priced at 1,927 rials for buying and 1,941 for selling.
The Saudi rial also reached its highest value against the Yemeni rial, with the selling price hitting 507 rials and the buying price at approximately 506 rials in Marib.
This marks the lowest recorded value of the Yemeni rial against foreign currencies in government-controlled areas. In contrast, the currency has remained relatively stable in Houthi-controlled regions, where it is valued at 538 rials per dollar for selling and 534 for buying. The Saudi rial remains stable at 140 rials for buying and 141 for selling in those areas.
