October 9, 2024 — Yemeni lawmaker and businessman Sheikh Hamid Abdullah Al-Ahmar has publicly rejected the recent decision by the U.S. Treasury to impose sanctions against him for allegedly supporting the Palestinian resistance movement. In a statement, Al-Ahmar affirmed that his efforts align with the laws and positions of Yemen.
In his statement, reviewed by Bran Press, Al-Ahmar criticized the U.S. government's actions amidst the "tragic" conditions in Gaza due to Israeli military actions, which he claims are supported politically and militarily by the United States and some Western powers. He condemned the sanctioning decision, issued on October 7, 2024, as an example of blatant American bias toward injustice and occupation.
"This unjustified decision is another example of American prejudice in favor of oppression and reflects an illegitimate attempt to criminalize my modest legal and humanitarian efforts in support of the Palestinian cause," he stated.
Al-Ahmar emphasized that the sanctions contradict international laws affirming the right of people to resist occupation and attain freedom. He also noted that such actions indicate discomfort with the advocacy for human rights and opposition to oppression in Palestine.
He stated that his efforts are fully consistent with the commitments of Yemen and its people regarding the Palestinian issue, aligning with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
Al-Ahmar held the U.S. administration responsible for the consequences of its decision, which he condemned, warning that it could cause harm to him, his family, and his businesses. He announced plans to take legal action against the sanctions, describing them as unjust and lacking legal or ethical basis.
"This designation will not deter me from continuing my steadfast support for the just Palestinian cause," he asserted, expressing his commitment to standing with the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle against occupation.
He further emphasized that solidarity with the Palestinian cause is not a crime but a humanitarian and legitimate duty dictated by ethical principles and international agreements.
Al-Ahmar thanked all those who supported him and rejected the sanctions, highlighting the importance of fighting for just causes, particularly the issues surrounding Jerusalem and Palestine.
On October 7, the U.S. Treasury announced sanctions against Al-Ahmar and nine of his companies, along with three other Arab businessmen, for allegedly financing Hamas. According to the Treasury's statement, Al-Ahmar has been a long-time supporter of Hamas and plays a critical role in its fundraising efforts under the guise of charitable work.
