Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Canadian Conservative Party, urged the Liberal government on Friday to add the Houthi movement to Canada’s list of terrorist organizations.
In a statement published on the CBC Canada website seen by Barran Press, Poilievre described the Houthis as “a front for the Revolutionary Guard,” which he labeled as the largest organized terrorist group in the world.
He continued, “The murderous Iranian regime uses groups like the Houthis and Hezbollah to spread violence and terrorism globally. While the Houthis could operate in our country, we cannot be certain of their capabilities because we lack the laws to stop or even monitor them.”
Poilievre emphasized that designating the Houthis as terrorists would enable Canadian banks to freeze any assets they hold in Canada and allow law enforcement to charge anyone providing them financial or material support.
On January 17, 2024, the United States reclassified the Houthis as a specially designated global terrorist organization after having removed them from its list in 2021.
The Conservative Party of Canada is one of the country’s largest political parties and plays a significant role in shaping national policy and decisions, with Poilievre as a prominent figure in Canadian politics.
