France announced on Friday that it has summoned the Israeli ambassador to Paris in response to a recent attack by the Israeli military on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), of which France is a key contributor.
The French Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning these attacks as a blatant violation of international law that endangers the lives of peacekeeping forces. France called for an immediate cessation of such actions and demanded an explanation from Israel regarding the rationale behind them.
UNIFIL reported that its forces have been subjected to a series of attacks over the past few days, resulting in injuries to several personnel and damage to some of its infrastructure. The mission accused Israel of repeatedly firing at its positions in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military acknowledged its attacks on UNIFIL, justifying them by claiming the presence of Hezbollah elements in the area.
Since September 23, Israel has intensified its airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting what it describes as infrastructure and facilities belonging to Hezbollah in its stronghold in southern Beirut and other regions of the country. On September 30, Israel announced the commencement of ground operations.
