Yemenis celebrated the 61st anniversary of the October 14 Revolution, which marked the uprising against British colonial rule in South Yemen. The revolution, ignited by revolutionary Rajeh Labouza from the mountains of Radfan, ended a century and a quarter of foreign domination.

On this occasion, Barran Press conducted interviews with local officials, politicians, and activists in Hadramout province to discuss the significance of the October 14 Revolution and its ties to the September 26 Revolution of 1962, which overthrew the oppressive Imamate regime in the north.

Interviewees highlighted the common goals and principles shared by both revolutions and emphasized their collaborative efforts to liberate Yemen from tyranny and colonialism, ultimately striving for national unity.

A Manifestation of the People’s Will

Political activist Sarah Salem Abdullah Al-Jabri stated, “The October 14 Revolution embodies the people’s will and their right to freedom from colonialism.” She emphasized that the revolution is closely linked to the September 26 Revolution in its principles and objectives, describing their relationship as both integrated and ongoing.

Al-Jabri called for remembrance of the heroes and their sacrifices, stressing the importance of national unity and a hopeful future that promotes democratic values and sustainable development.

Interconnected Revolutions

Mohsen Salem Naseer, head of the organizational division of the Hadramaut Conference, also noted the connection between the two revolutions. He explained that the leadership and fighters from both revolutions were in constant communication, collaborating with leaders of liberation movements across the Arab region, particularly in Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

He pointed out that several Southern fighters contributed to the September Revolution, which in turn became a vital supporter of the October Revolution, leading to the South's independence.

Abdul Hakim Saleh Bin Qadeem, head of the Justice and Building Party's Hadramaut branch, echoed this sentiment, stating that the objectives of the October 14 Revolution stem from the goals of the September 26 Revolution, which liberated Yemen from over 190 years of oppressive occupation.

Simultaneous Revolutions

Ali Khamees Subaih, the local council secretary in Tarim district, described the two revolutions as closely intertwined, with a strong bond and cooperation among the revolutionaries. He noted that after the September Revolution dismantled the Imamate in the north, its fighters supported the October revolutionaries in their quest for liberation from British colonial rule.

Subaih characterized this collaboration as a revolutionary momentum that successfully expelled the British oppressors, asserting that the deep connection between the two revolutions remains undeniable to this day.

Ongoing Revolution

Bin Qadeem discussed the lasting achievements of the October Revolution, stating it has crafted a significant historical narrative for the Yemeni people and continues to pursue its goals. He insisted that despite the challenges faced over the past 61 years, the revolution's objectives remain alive in the hearts and minds of all patriotic Yemenis.

He emphasized the necessity for the revolution to persist until its aims are fully realized, highlighting the dire circumstances that spurred the revolution in a time when Yemen was grappling with numerous afflictions.

A Promising Future Ahead

Subaih remarked that the October Revolution allowed southern Yemen to breathe freely after enduring the harsh realities of British colonialism. He stated that the revolution symbolizes a new dawn and a promising future, establishing a republic that advanced education and instituted a system of law and governance.

He emphasized the sacrifices made by the revolutionaries and the importance of safeguarding the revolution's gains, warning against allowing them to be undermined or misappropriated by those who do not comprehend their noble objectives.

Significant Commemoration

Bin Qadeem underscored the importance of celebrating this day, urging every citizen to honor the heroes who forged this moment in history. He called for remembering the fallen, suggesting the creation of memorials to inspire future generations with their sacrifices and contributions.

A Call for Dialogue and Unity

Naseer urged current Yemeni leaders to prioritize the people’s welfare, avoiding political squabbles and personal ambitions. He advocated for unconditional dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders to navigate the ongoing crisis that burdens the nation.

Subaih also encouraged the youth to recognize the significance of the September and October revolutions, urging them to remain vigilant against conspiracies aimed at undermining their hard-won gains. He called for a steadfast commitment to the revolution's objectives, asserting that Yemen has space for all under a republic that promotes justice and development.

In closing, Al-Jabri reiterated the importance of honoring the heroes and their sacrifices, emphasizing the need for national unity and a collective effort toward a brighter future that upholds democratic values and sustainable development.
