A protest took place in Taiz, southwestern Yemen, on Wednesday, voicing strong opposition to the ongoing decline of the Yemeni rial against foreign currencies.
The demonstration marched through Jamal Street, culminating in front of the local authority's temporary headquarters at the Oil Company building. Protesters expressed deep concern over the rapid collapse of the rial, which has significantly diminished citizens' purchasing power and driven up prices of essential goods.
Participants, including shopkeepers who closed their businesses in solidarity, urged the internationally recognized Yemeni government to take urgent measures to stem the devaluation of the national currency and improve the economic situation.
They also called on the Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene and provide necessary support, demanding that the government implement serious and prompt actions to resolve the currency division and resume oil and gas exports.
In recent days, the Yemeni currency has faced unprecedented and rapid depreciation, with the U.S. dollar trading at 2,002 riyals for sale and 2,011 riyals for purchase in Aden, according to banking sources.
