The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has urged the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization, to annul the death sentence issued against Yemeni journalist Taha Al-Maamari.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the IFJ reported receiving a notification from the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate indicating that the Specialized Criminal Court in Sana'a had sentenced Al-Maamari, owner of the media companies Yemen Digital Media and Yemen Live for Media Production and Broadcasting, to death and ordered the confiscation of his assets on fabricated charges.

The IFJ condemned the arbitrary ruling and called on the de facto authorities and other armed groups to cease using the judiciary as a means to intimidate and silence journalists and media workers both within Yemen and beyond.

Anthony Bellanger, the General Secretary of the IFJ, stated, "We condemn these actions taken by the de facto authorities in Sana'a, including the arbitrary sentence against our colleague Al-Maamari, which aims solely to prevent journalists from doing their jobs and to deter media investors in Yemen."

He called on the international community and journalists' organizations worldwide to advocate for the repeal of this unjust ruling and to demand the release of all imprisoned journalists in the country.

The death sentence against Taha Al-Maamari was issued by the Houthi-controlled primary court in Sana'a on September 24, 2024, along with a ruling to confiscate his properties both domestically and internationally, according to a statement from the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate.
