The United Kingdom has pledged "full support" to the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council to help it overcome challenges and strengthen the economic and political framework of the country.

This commitment was made by the UK Ambassador to Yemen, Abta Sharif, during her meeting with Council member Othman Mijalli, as reported by the official Yemeni news agency, Saba.

Ambassador Sharif emphasized the UK's ongoing support for the Council and the Yemeni government, highlighting the importance of building and reinforcing the economic and political system in Yemen with the help of regional and international partners.

During the meeting, Mijalli stressed the necessity of international support for the Council and the government, particularly in bolstering the Central Bank's position to protect the national currency. He noted the responsibility of the international community to assist the government and supply the national army with resources to confront threats, transforming liberated areas into productive hubs to alleviate economic complications.

Mijalli condemned the silence of international organizations regarding the Houthi group's actions, which are classified as terrorism, pointing out Iran's support for the Houthis in executing their destructive agendas and economically strangling the world.

The Yemeni government is currently facing a severe currency crisis, with the rial reaching its lowest exchange rate against foreign currencies. The dollar has surpassed 2,000 rials in Aden and other government-controlled areas, up from 1,676 rials in late April, while the Saudi riyal is trading at 524 rials for sale, increasing from 441 rials.

This situation marks the lowest value of the national currency against foreign currencies in government-controlled regions, prompting the government to seek international assistance to address these challenges affecting the daily lives of millions of Yemenis.
