As of Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the indirect effects of the low-pressure system known as "Masyal," which affected Oman last week, have completely dissipated in Yemen. The system had previously brought heavy rainfall to several Yemeni provinces, notably Shabwa in the southeast and Al-Jawf in the northeast.
The heavy rains in Shabwa resulted in significant flooding, isolating homes in the village of Yarouma in the Al-Said district for hours due to unprecedented water flow from thunderstorms and low-lying clouds pushed into Yemen by the Masyal system.
In Al-Jawf, the torrential rains and flooding impacted 1,260 displaced families in the eastern part of the province, prompting the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center to provide emergency food assistance to the affected families.
As the influence of Masyal fades, Yemen is expected to be directly affected by a new low-pressure system currently approaching the eastern coastal province of Al-Mahrah. Numerical weather models indicate that the district of Al-Ghaydah, the provincial capital, will experience direct impacts from the new system by 11 PM today.
Heavy rain is anticipated in Al-Ghaydah, Qishn, and Sayhut after midnight and into the early hours of Wednesday. Rainfall is projected to extend to Mukalla, Al-Rida Al-Sharqi, and Al-Shahr in Hadhramaut, as well as other regions.
Forecast data suggests that the thunderstorm activity associated with this new low-pressure system will expand on Wednesday afternoon and evening, affecting large areas in Al-Mahrah, Hadhramaut, Abyan, Aden, Lahij, Taiz, Al-Hudaydah, Raymah, Al-Mahwit, Hajjah, and parts of Saada, Ibb, Al-Dhale, Shabwa, and Al-Bayda.
Simultaneously, a high-pressure system is expected to dominate the weather in Sana'a, Marib, Al-Jawf, and parts of Shabwa, Al-Bayda, Dhamar, Amran, and Saada, which will hinder the low-pressure system's effects from advancing into these areas.
The impacts of this new low-pressure system on Al-Ghaydah, Mukalla, and other coastal regions in Al-Mahrah and Hadhramaut are expected to last until Sunday, October 27, bringing heavy to moderate rainfall and potential runoff, necessitating caution.
