On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Yemeni Parliament Speaker Sultan al-Barakani urged the United States to assume its role as an active partner in achieving peace and to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government in addressing economic challenges. He also called for a clear and deterrent stance against the Houthi group's terrorist activities, which he said threaten the future of Yemenis and global stability.

Al-Barakani made these remarks during a meeting with US Ambassador to Yemen Stephen Fagin, where they discussed important national issues, including peace processes, regional and international developments, and other matters of mutual interest, according to the Yemeni news agency Saba.

He emphasized the need for US support in helping the Yemeni government overcome its challenges, particularly in stabilizing the currency to improve citizens' living standards and provide essential services.

The Parliament Speaker outlined the severe challenges Yemen faces due to the crimes of the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization and supported by Iran. He highlighted the group's violations against civilians and its threat to regional and international security.

Regarding peace in Yemen, al-Barakani reaffirmed their commitment to a comprehensive peace based on three main references, ensuring the republic's system, Yemen's unity, and territorial integrity grounded in justice, democracy, freedom, and human rights. He stated that a terrorist group claiming divine rights cannot genuinely participate in peace negotiations.

The meeting also touched on regional developments, including the ongoing Israeli "brutal" actions against the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples and their catastrophic implications for international peace and security. Al-Barakani condemned the Israeli occupation's continued violence against civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

In response, Ambassador Fagin reiterated the US commitment to Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy, emphasizing ongoing efforts to stabilize the region. He expressed hope for Yemen to achieve a just and comprehensive peace and enjoy security and stability. Fagin condemned Houthi violations against Yemenis, affirming that the US position remains steadfast in supporting Yemen's security, stability, and unity while seeking an end to the crisis, with high-level attention from the US administration.
