Medical sources in the Dhobab district of western Taiz reported on Saturday, October 26, 2024, that five women have died and four others were injured after falling into a sewage pit, commonly referred to as a "biara," during a wedding celebration on Friday evening.
According to sources speaking to Barran Press, the collapse of the sewage pit in the Dhobab market led to approximately 25 women and girls falling into the pit, resulting in fatalities and serious injuries, with four women in critical condition. Due to the inability to provide adequate medical care at the nearby Dhobab Hospital, the injured were transferred to hospitals in the nearby Al-Mokha district, approximately 45 kilometers away.
Following the incident, residents of Dhobab organized a protest against the local director and the government hospital administration for failing to provide necessary healthcare to the injured, citing a lack of oxygen and essential medications.
Protesters blocked access roads to the hospital by burning tires and subsequently closed the facility, demanding accountability. As of this report, local authorities have not commented on the incident or its implications.
