In a historic visit, General Fayyad Al-Ruwaili, Chief of the General Staff of the Saudi Armed Forces, arrived in Tehran on November 10, 2024. This marks the first visit of its kind by a high-ranking Saudi military official to Iran.

According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, Al-Ruwaili was welcomed by Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, upon his arrival with a high-level delegation.

The discussions are set to focus on bilateral relations and defense collaboration between the two nations. Iranian semi-official news agency Tasnim reported that enhancing defense diplomacy and expanding cooperative efforts are key topics during this meeting.

In December of the previous year, General Bagheri conducted phone talks with Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, addressing regional developments and the importance of increasing defense cooperation between the armed forces of both countries, as well as significant issues in the Islamic world.

In March 2024, Tehran and Riyadh, with Chinese mediation, agreed to restore relations after seven years of hostility that threatened stability and security in the Gulf region and contributed to conflicts across the Middle East, from Yemen to Syria.
