The British Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on November 12, 2024, that a vessel was subjected to multiple explosions off the coast of Hodeidah, southwestern Yemen.
According to a statement from UKMTO, a ship located 70 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah reported several explosions in its vicinity. Fortunately, no damage to the ship was reported, and the crew is safe.
The statement did not specify the source of the explosions; however, such incidents are typically attributed to the Houthi movement, which is classified as a terrorist organization and controls most of the Hodeidah coastal province.
This incident occurred shortly after Houthi-affiliated media reported American and British airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled sites in the provinces of Sana’a, Amran, and Hodeidah.
Since November, the Houthis have been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden.
In response to Houthi aggression and to protect maritime navigation, the United States formed a multinational coalition in December 2023. U.S. forces have periodically conducted strikes against Houthi military targets.
Since January 12, 2024, U.S. and British airstrikes against the Houthis have totaled approximately 560, resulting in the deaths of 58 fighters and injuries to 86, according to Houthi acknowledgments.
