On November 17, 2024, the local authority in Marib governorate convened to discuss urgent interventions and key needs in the areas of water supply and environmental sanitation. The meeting, led by Marib Deputy Governor Abdu Rabbu Miftah, included Frederick Ba Tajni, the water and environmental sanitation cluster coordinator for Yemen.

During the extensive meeting, Miftah highlighted priority projects, including the city’s sewage system and water supply initiatives in Marib and the surrounding displacement camps. He emphasized the need to support governmental offices to enhance their service activities in response to the ongoing influx of displaced persons.

Reports from relevant offices presented during the meeting outlined significant challenges. A major concern was the need for heavy machinery to assist the Waste Management Fund in collecting solid waste and pumping sewage from the city and camps, as well as the need to rehabilitate the waste disposal site.

The discussion also covered the educational and health sectors, with a focus on protecting over 165,000 students from prevalent diseases and epidemics. The emphasis was on creating a healthy educational environment to prevent the spread of cholera and other infections, alongside improving healthcare services and training medical personnel.

In the water and agriculture sector, office managers outlined key projects, such as extending the Marib Dam channels, creating ponds for groundwater recharge, completing water projects, expanding drainage networks, and establishing saline water treatment plants in Marib city, the valley, and Harib districts.

Frederick Ba Tajni explained that his visit aimed to assess past interventions and discuss urgent needs and priority projects to be included in the cluster's plan for the upcoming year.
