Security forces in Shabwah governorate violently dispersed a peaceful protest by dozens of teachers on Wednesday, November 20th, 2024. According to local sources, the assault, led by Commander Ali Majour of the Joint Forces, involved physical and verbal abuse of teachers demanding their overdue salaries and an increase in pay to offset the rapidly depreciating Yemeni rial.

The teachers, who had been without pay for two months, staged a demonstration in Atq, the governorate's capital, carrying banners and chanting slogans demanding their rights and a resolution to the ongoing salary crisis. They announced a strike, vowing to halt teaching until their demands are met. Photos obtained by Barran Press show security forces violently confronting the protesting teachers outside a government building. One prominent slogan read, "I am a teacher; I will not begin the lesson until this matter is resolved." The incident highlights the growing frustration among teachers facing severe financial hardship due to the ongoing conflict and economic instability in Yemen.
