Intensive efforts are underway in Riyadh to resume sessions of the Yemeni Parliament in Aden, the country’s temporary capital, which have been suspended since the Houthi coup in September 2024, aside from urgent meetings held in Seiyun and Aden.
According to the Yemeni news agency Saba, the Presidency of the Parliament convened a meeting on Wednesday, led by Speaker Sultan al-Barakani, to discuss the agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session. The meeting focused on preparations necessary to resume parliamentary sessions and to enhance national consensus against the Houthi militia.
The parliamentary leadership emphasized the importance of resuming sessions to fulfill its legislative and oversight roles in the current circumstances. They expressed a commitment to unifying efforts to expedite urgent economic and monetary solutions to improve public services for citizens.
Following the meeting, the parliamentary leadership met with Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber. During this encounter, they reiterated the importance of state institutions fulfilling their national duties and constitutional responsibilities to counter Iranian and Houthi threats to Yemen and the region.
Additionally, a meeting took place between the Chairman of the Southern Transitional Council, Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, and Ambassador Al-Jaber, discussing the political, economic, and humanitarian situation in Yemen and joint efforts to enhance security and stability.
These discussions come after a series of meetings aimed at revitalizing the parliament's legislative function, which has been largely dormant since its last session in 2022, when it extended confidence to the Presidential Leadership Council amid accusations that the Transitional Council is obstructing parliamentary operations in Aden.
Observers believe these efforts aim to reestablish the Parliament's role in overseeing government actions and supporting state institution activation as part of a comprehensive reform program to address the severe economic and living crises facing the country.
