On November 21, 2024, the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen announced the commencement of phase two of the rehabilitation project for the Al-Abr international road in Hadramout, eastern Yemen.

In a brief statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) and reported by Barran Press, the Saudi program confirmed the initiation of this phase, which spans 40 kilometers. The road rehabilitation project aims to enhance traveler safety, reduce traffic accidents, support ground transportation, facilitate access to essential services, and strengthen connectivity between Yemeni provinces.

The Saudi Program emphasized that the Al-Abr road is a strategic artery linking Yemen with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Phase one of the project involved the repair and rehabilitation of the road from Al-Abr to Al-Dhuwabi, covering a distance of 50 kilometers. Phase two will extend from Al-Dhuwabi to Al-Ghuwayran, measuring 40 kilometers.

The project includes the rehabilitation of several segments: the "Al-Makhatim to Al-Ghuwayran" stretch (40 kilometers), the "Al-Ghuwayran to Al-Dhuwabi" stretch (40 kilometers), and the "Al-Dhuwabi to Al-Abr " stretch (52 kilometers).

The Saudi program began this initiative on September 13, 2021, to mitigate the dangers and damages caused by the deteriorating road conditions and the lack of safety measures. According to the launch statement, the project aims to facilitate transportation and trade, reduce accident rates, enhance safety, and improve connectivity between cities. The project's total cost is approximately 36 million Saudi riyals.
