This statement was made during a meeting between Evgeny Koudrov, Russia's acting ambassador to Yemen, and Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council and leader of the Southern Transitional Council. According to a statement published by the Russian embassy on X (formerly Twitter), the discussion included a detailed overview of the current situation in Yemen, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.
Ambassador Koudrov emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to settle the political crisis in Yemen and highlighted Russia's steps in this direction. He also stressed the need to take all possible measures to prevent an escalation of armed conflict in the region.
Furthermore, Koudrov noted the traditionally friendly dynamics of Russian-Yemeni relations and updated on the embassy's efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation.
On November 19, 2024, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's special envoy to the Middle East and Africa, called for strengthened efforts to establish a permanent national dialogue among Yemenis under UN sponsorship. During a meeting with former Yemeni ambassador Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, he underscored the urgency of de-escalating tensions in this strategically vital region.
Additionally, on September 20, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced the decision to reopen Russia's embassy in Aden, Yemen's temporary capital, after years of closure in Sana'a, which is under Houthi control. Lavrov stated that the reopening aims to improve communication and coordination with the Yemeni government.
